Né en 1933 a Pilot Mound au Manitoba, John K. Esler est diplômé de l'Université du Manitoba. Depuis 1964, il est professeur d'art a l'Université de Calgary. Il reçoit, en 1966, une mention d'honneur au Boston Printmakers' Annual et en 1970 The Art Alliance of the Central Pennsylvania Graphic Exhibition lui décerne son Premier Prix. Il obtient le Premier Prix de la Troisième Biennale Internationale de l'Image a Épinal, France, en 1976. Ses Œuvres font partie des collections permanentes du Musée d'Art Moderne de New York, du Victoria and Albert Museum a Londres, de la Galerie Nationale du Canada ainsi que la Galerie de l'Ontario a Toronto. Esler is a graduate of the University of Manitoba and since 1964 has been teaching art at the University of Calgary. He is both an R.C.A. and C.A.R. and from 1976 to 1978 was chairman of the Print and Drawing Council of Canada. In 1966, he received and honourable mention at the Boston Printmakers' Annual, in 1970 the First Purchase Award of the Art Alliance of the Central Pennsylvania Graphic Exhibition and in 1976 he won the Pruchase Award of the Third Biennale Internationale de l'Image in Epinal, France.His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum on London, the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
